Answers to the questions we hear most — about our guides, the repair finder, recommended parts, and our store. Have a question we have not covered? Email plumbingbythebook@gmail.com.
Is the repair advice on this site free?
Yes. Every guide, diagnostic, and the repair finder are free to use. We are a faceless DIY plumbing site: our goal is to help you make the right fix the first time.
How accurate is your advice?
Each guide is fact-checked against manufacturer documentation and authoritative plumbing-trade sources by our editorial team. That said, plumbing varies by home and fixture — when a repair is beyond a confident DIY fix (a behind-the-wall valve, a leak inside the wall, a main-line backup), we tell you to stop and call a licensed plumber.
Do you earn money from the parts you recommend?
Some links to parts are affiliate links: if you buy through them, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases. We only recommend parts we believe are right for the repair; the commission never changes our advice.
Can the finder tell me my exact part?
The Faucet, Shower and Toilet Repair Finder narrows you to the LIKELY part and the correct tool from your fixture’s brand and symptoms. It is a starting point — always confirm the exact model stamped on your fixture or the old part before buying, since the wrong size or brand will not seal.
Where do I buy the parts you recommend?
Our guides link to recommended parts at trusted retailers, and select parts are available directly from our store as it launches. Either way, confirm the part fits your fixture first.
What are your shipping and return policies?
See our Shipping Policy and Refund and Returns Policy. Note that parts bought through our affiliate links are shipped and returned under the outside retailer’s policies, not ours.
Is a running toilet really worth fixing right away?
Yes — a silently running toilet can waste roughly 200 gallons of water a day, which shows up on your bill. Most running-toilet fixes are a cheap flapper or fill valve; see our toilet guides and the finder to diagnose it.
