The handle on your tub and shower is cracked, loose, spinning on the stem or worn through at the finish, and the rest of the trim is fine. You do not want a whole trim kit. You want one handle. The catch is in how makers identify handle kits. Delta’s RP73375 page, for example, titles the kit “Metal Lever Handle Kit – 14 Series” under the Trinsic collection, and its answers name a separate volume handle (RP73377) and temperature handle (RP73378) for Trinsic 17 Series models (Delta). Our inference from examples like that: a replacement shower handle has to be matched to its series, collection and function, and “a Delta handle” or “a Moen handle” is not enough to order from.
The short answer: start from the trim model and the maker’s parts diagram, then check how the handle moves, then pick the kit whose page names your series and function. This page gives that lookup, a chart of documented handle-only kits, and the places where the sources disagree or go quiet. It does not cover cartridge replacement or whole-trim conversions.
Start With the Trim Model, Not the Handle
The lookup that works runs in one order: trim model, then the model-specific parts diagram, then the handle’s function and attachment, then the finish-specific service part. One more point: a diagram establishes an application, but its separate component callouts do not by themselves tell you what comes inside a purchased kit.
Use the makers’ own lookup tools. Kohler offers a service-part lookup with model and name searches and photo identification, and Delta provides a model-based parts lookup. Moen publishes exploded parts views for its trims, such as the Chateau diagram.
According to Moen’s system-identification chart, the word Moen appears on the escutcheon trim plate of single-handle showers and tub/showers, but the research found no universal location for an orderable series or model number. So photograph the whole trim and the mounting cavity before you start searching.
Rank what you find. Model-specific manufacturer diagrams and instructions come first, product and application answers second, retailer package descriptions third, and forums last. Generic merchandising text can be weaker than the installation sheet for your trim.
How the Handle Moves Narrows the Field
Movement does not pick the kit, but it rules out whole families. This table comes from Moen’s system-identification chart:
| System | Useful movement clue |
|---|---|
| Moen Posi-Temp | Rotates counter-clockwise to turn on, clockwise to 6:00 to turn off; no volume control (Moen) |
| Moen Moentrol | Pulls out to turn on, pushes in to turn off; pulling in/out sets volume (Moen) |
| Moen M-CORE 2-Series | Rotates counter-clockwise to turn on, clockwise to 6:00 to turn off; no volume control (Moen) |
| Moen M-CORE 3-Series | Lifts up to turn on, tilts down to turn off; tilting/lifting sets volume (Moen) |
Moen’s chart shows temperature adjustment only in pictures, so compare your handle against the chart itself for that.
Two cautions. The same Moen chart lists the older Standard valve, introduced in 1960, as pulling out to turn on and pushing in to turn off, just like both Moentrol generations (Moen), so “it pulls out, therefore Moentrol” is too broad. Inspect the escutcheon and the mechanism. And new trim can sit on an old valve: asked about new trim for a 12-year-old Monitor 1300 valve, Delta answered that any current T13 or T14 trim will fit, but that the existing RP19804 cartridge stays, not the cartridge that comes with the new trim (Delta). How new the trim looks tells you little.
For Delta, the cited 13/14 handles serve single-control applications, while Delta’s Trinsic 17 diagram shows separate volume and temperature controls. One control or two is therefore your first Delta question.
Replacement Shower Handle: The Chart
Each row below pairs a handle kit with the series, collection and function its cited page states, and with the boundary the source draws. These are documented examples, not an exhaustive inventory and not a check of current stock.
| Maker / kit | Documented series and collection | Function and form | Compatibility boundary |
|---|---|---|---|
| Delta RP73375 | Specified 13/14 Series; Trinsic | Single-control metal lever | Approved replacement for RP19628 on a 1400 single-function installation; 17 Series needs different parts (Delta) |
| Delta RP48717 | 13/14 Series; Classic | Single-control metal lever | Excludes lift/tilt 600 controls (Delta) |
| Delta H79 | 1300/1400 shower applications; collection not established | Single-control metal lever | H71-to-H79 substitution supported; check finish availability (Delta) |
| Delta RP73377 | Trinsic T17059/T17259/T17459 | 17 Series volume lever | Separate from the temperature part (diagram) |
| Delta RP73378 | Same Trinsic models | 17 Series temperature knob/cover | Separate from the volume lever (diagram) |
| Delta RP75439BL | Ara T17067/T17267/T17467 | 17 Series volume lever, matte black | Does not include the temperature knob (Delta) |
| Delta RP75440 | Same Ara models | Temperature knob/cover | Separate volume assembly (Ara diagram) |
| Delta RP74148 | Foundations single-handle tub/shower | Lever assembly with adapter | Adapter not sold separately; the specified RP1991/1600 application is excluded (Delta) |
| Moen 100710 | Posi-Temp; 1222 cartridge | Clear single-control knob | Do not extend to every Moen system (Moen diagram) |
| Moen 100657 | Chateau Posi-Temp; 1222 cartridge | Single-control lever | Diagram identifies adapter 116653 (Moen diagram) |
| Moen 200800 | Colinet M-CORE 2-Series; 1212 cartridge | Single-control lever | Documented for UTS244201/UTS244202EP/UTS244203EP (Moen diagram) |
| Moen 200788 | Wynford M-CORE 3-Series; 1213; U130/U140 valves | Handle kit | Documented for UT35501/UT35502/UT35503 and listed EP variants (Moen diagram) |
| Kohler 1046987-CP | Coralais shower trim | Single lever, polished chrome | Kohler’s parts viewer places it on K-T15611-4-CP; fit on other trim not established (Kohler, parts viewer) |
| Pfister 940-347 | Venturi; SecurePfit; 0X8/JX8 | Single-control handle assembly | Specification includes a protective washer (Pfister) |
| Pfister 940-265J | Ashfield; SecurePfit; 0X8/JX8 | Single-control lever, brushed nickel | Pfister’s R89-1YP parts explosion calls out 940-265 as the handle (Pfister diagram, Ashfield support, SupplyHouse) |
| American Standard M961636-0020A | Colony Soft T675.500/R121SS; cartridge 023529-0070A | Single-control lever kit, chrome | Screw kit called out separately; full box contents unverified (diagram) |
| American Standard 060354-0020A | Hampton 7220/7221/7222 bath/shower | Individual metal lever, chrome | Lever base, adapter, screw and caps identified separately (instructions) |
| Symmons T-31-RP | Temptrol | Temperature-control handle kit | Includes screw and plug button; distinct from the small diverter/volume handle (Symmons) |
Three narrower points rest on one source each. According to Delta’s compatibility answer, RP48717 also works on 1600 Series valves, though there may be a slight gap behind the handle (Delta). Kohler’s parts viewer identifies 1046987 for the K-T15611-4-CP (Kohler diagram, Ferguson-hosted). Kohler’s Finial instructions document handle 77893, with 77894 (biscuit insert) and 77895 (white insert) as variants on the same application, each ordered with a finish/color code (Kohler instructions). Current availability of those variants was not found.
For package contents, the sources split by seller. According to Lowe’s, genuine 100710 includes knob, cap and screw (Lowe’s). Chadwell describes chrome 100657 as handle, black adapter, screws and Allen wrench (Chadwell). Verify the package for your finish rather than assuming it.
Found your valve series in the chart? Confirm the exact kit against the maker's page and your trim model before you buy, because a similar-looking handle does not decide it:

Rules That Keep You From Buying the Wrong Handle
Use an application statement for any collection change. Delta authorizes specified RP73375 substitutions (Delta). Separately, Moen documents a Castleby-to-Kingsley replacement (Moen). Neither establishes brand-wide interchangeability.
Order by function. Trinsic RP73377 and RP73378, and Ara RP75439 and RP75440, sit in different positions in their diagrams. A volume handle and a temperature handle are not alternatives for each other.
The adapter may be the part that failed. Moen’s Chateau diagram separates the handle, adapter 116653 and limit stop 106479. If the handle is intact but its connection to the stem is damaged, an adapter-only repair is a reasonable model-specific inference. That is our inference, not Moen’s statement, and “spinning” alone does not diagnose it. Delta’s RP74148 adapter, by contrast, is not sold separately (Delta). Separately, Moen 106479 is a temperature-limit-stop kit, not a handle adapter.
Do not carry a faucet part onto a shower valve. Delta’s RP73375 answer distinguishes shower cartridges from faucet 3538-MPU, which “uses H238 handles”.
Do not assume a conversion ball is needed on Delta 13/14. Delta’s H79 answers mix 13/14 interchange with conversion-ball advice for changing an RP2389 clear knob to a lever (Delta H79 Q&A), while its RP48717 guidance separates rotating 1400 controls from lift/tilt 600. The second is more application-specific, so go by it.
Installation differs by mechanism. Moen’s PosiTemp Lever Type 1 has a cap that pries off the end of the handle, and Moen lists a Phillips screwdriver for it (Type 1). Type 2 uses an underside 7/64-inch hex screw, then the adapter’s Phillips screw, and on select models a metal wavy washer that Moen notes is not shown in the key legend (Type 2). Moen’s Type 1 and Type 2 procedures both say the water supply shut-off valves must be turned off first (Type 1, Type 2). Delta’s 17 Series instructions have you assemble the controls temporarily to check temperature before final fastening (Delta 17). The 17T has its own sheet (Delta 17T). Follow the sheet for your exact trim.
When the Handle Is Discontinued
A product page, a retailer delisting and a manufacturer discontinuation are three different records. Do not treat a missing listing as proof the maker has dropped the part, and do not stretch a finish-specific discontinuation to the whole kit family.
One discontinued handle with a documented handle-kit replacement is the Moen Castleby 101408 (Moen 101408 replacement instructions). Moen’s 101408 replacement instructions say the Castleby handle “has been retired and is no longer available” and name the Kingsley 114346 hub/lever plus 114343 cap/screw as the comparable replacement. Its procedure removes the old adapter, when present, instead of reusing it (Moen replacement instructions). That is one specific, manufacturer-authorized change, not permission to mix arbitrary Moen handles.
Other cases are less settled, and the sources are seller-specific:
- Delta H79. Delta lists a chrome H79, but the research also found Delta showing it out of stock and AMRE saying it is no longer available from the manufacturer (Delta, AMRE). Confirm with Delta before you rely on it. Delta’s own Q&A dates the H79PB polished-brass discontinuation to October 31, 2020, and no same-finish successor was found.
- Moen 100657P. SupplyHouse marks the polished-brass 100657P discontinued as of January 8, 2025 (SupplyHouse), while Moen’s base 100657 page still exposes a polished-brass choice (Moen). That does not show every 100657 finish is gone.
- Kohler 1046987-G. One retailer marks the brushed-chrome kit discontinued (KBAuthority), while Kohler still lists the polished-chrome part. That does not establish a matching-finish successor.
Universal Handles, Aftermarket Kits and Mobile-Home Faucets
Danco’s universal 10805 has explicit limits. Danco says its vise-grip-style adapter fits specified splined stems and indentations, and it excludes smooth plastic cartridge stems and smooth metal-ball mechanisms shaped like a D, circle or square (Danco 10805). So “universal” does not mean it fits every modern shower cartridge.
Danco also sells model-specific alternatives. Danco says its 10302 is a Moen Posi-Temp replacement for OEM 100710, with clear knob, index button and screw (Danco 10302). Danco’s 11009 instruction sheet supplies different adapters for Posi-Temp and Moentrol (Danco instructions). On diverter valves the sources disagree: a Lowe’s listing claims fit with and without diverters, while Danco’s own sheet excludes valves with a diverter (Lowe’s). We have not found anything that resolves it, so ask Danco before using 11009 on a valve with a diverter.
Advertised compatibility is not maker approval. An OEM diagram does not validate another manufacturer’s tolerances or materials. A listing sold “for” a maker’s part carries the maker’s part number only as an identifier.
Forum reports show how near fits go wrong. A Reddit user reported that escutcheons blocked access to a universal adapter’s screw (Reddit), and a Terry Love participant described buying a 1222-associated handle for an older 1225 installation (Terry Love). Those are individual stories, not failure rates. If the valve was roughed in too far back from the finished wall, Moen says extension kits are available and lists them by valve type in its extension guidance.
On two- and three-handle faucets, the handle follows the stem’s broach, the cavity inside the handle. A J broach is a clue, not a mobile-home standard: Danco’s 24114K adapter kit #14 fits named J-type applications and accepts universal handles with a square broach (Danco 24114K). Danco’s historical catalog also lists some Phoenix and Pfister applications under other codes, and current stock was not verified (Danco catalog).
If You Still Cannot Tell Which Handle
When the trim has no markings and the diagram lookup comes up empty, gather three things: a photo of the whole trim, a photo of the mounting cavity with the handle off, and the handle itself. Take them to the maker’s parts line or a parts seller who asks about the valve, not just the brand.
Two rules help. Where a maker’s installation sheet and a retailer’s copy disagree, take the sheet. And where two manufacturer documents disagree with each other, confirm the exact trim model with the maker before ordering.
American Standard’s M950248 handle on the Colony 3375 bath/shower application shows the first rule at work. HD Supply calls it brass, but American Standard’s 3375 diagram identifies a plastic lever. If material matters to you, go by the manufacturer’s diagram.
What to Do Next
Write down the trim model and whether the handle rotates, pulls or tilts, then match both to your maker’s diagram before you order.
If you do not know your valve’s series yet, the shower valve identification guides walk through each brand’s tells. If the whole trim needs replacing rather than one handle, see which shower trim kits fit your valve. For the wider picture on fixing what is behind your walls and under your sinks, start at the Plumbing By The Book home page.
Can I replace just the shower handle and keep the trim?
Yes, where the maker sells a handle-only kit for your series, collection and function. The chart above lists documented examples from Delta, Moen, Kohler, Pfister, American Standard and Symmons.
Do Delta 13 and 14 Series handles interchange?
Delta documents specific interchange examples, including RP73375 and RP48717 on 13/14 Series applications. Do not turn those into an unrestricted rule, and note that RP73375 does not cover 17 Series.
Are the volume and temperature handles interchangeable on a two-control valve?
No. On Delta Trinsic and Ara 17 Series, the volume and temperature parts have different part numbers and different positions in the diagrams (Trinsic diagram, Ara diagram). Order by function.
Does a universal shower handle fit any valve?
No. Danco says its universal 10805 fits specified splined stems and excludes smooth plastic cartridge stems and smooth metal-ball mechanisms shaped like a D, circle or square.
What if my exact handle is discontinued?
Check with the maker for a documented successor. Moen, for example, specifies Kingsley 114346 and 114343 for the retired Castleby 101408 (Moen). A retailer delisting alone does not mean the maker has discontinued the part.
Is the adapter or the handle the part I should buy?
It depends on the trim. Moen’s Chateau diagram lists adapter 116653 separately, but Delta’s RP74148 adapter is not sold separately (Delta). Check your model’s diagram.

- Delta RP48717 Lever Handle Kit (search by part number) — Delta's parts page lists RP48717 as a single-control metal lever for 13/14 Series installations in the Classic collection. Delta excludes lift/tilt 600 controls and the RP74148 Foundations application, so confirm your series first.
- Delta RP73375 Lever Handle Kit (search by part number) — Delta's parts page lists RP73375 as a single-control metal lever for specified 13/14 Series installations, including Trinsic. Delta says 17 Series needs different parts, so check your valve before you order.
- Moen 100710 Posi-Temp Knob Handle (search by part number) — Moen documents 100710 as a clear single-control knob for Posi-Temp with a 1222 cartridge. Do not extend that fit to other Moen systems, and confirm the seller's package contents.
