Description
Oatey Hercules plumber's putty is the traditional sealing compound for sink strainers, lavatory pop-up drains, and other non-pressurized plumbing joints. The 14 oz tub is enough for dozens of repairs, and the putty stays pliable indefinitely rather than drying out or hardening.
Two important limits: do not use it on plastic fixtures, where it can damage the material — use silicone caulk instead — and do not use it on threaded pressurized connections, which call for PTFE tape or pipe joint compound. Putty seals by being squeezed between two surfaces, not by sealing threads.
To use it, pinch off a piece, roll it into a rope between your hands until it is soft, press it around the underside of the strainer lip, then seat the part and wipe away the squeeze-out. Within those limits, it is the go-to sealant any time you set a strainer or drain body into a sink basin, and one 14 oz tub lasts most homeowners for years.
